Deserie Wakefield-Baynes
Along with her fellow Atlanta medallists, Michael Diamond and Russell Mark, Deserie Wakefield-Baynes will be one of Australia’s top medal hopes in Sydney.
Four years ago Desirie Wakefield, as she then was, won a bronze medal in the double trap.
Much water has passed under the bridge since then. She has married Stephen Baynes, who now coaches her, and has become a parent.
But one constant has been her world class results in shooting events around the world.
At the World Championships in Peru in 1997 Wakefield Baynes won a bronze medal in the trap. The same year she won another bronze, this time at the World Cup event in Korea in the double trap.
In 1998 at a World Cup event in Egypt she won yet another bronze medal.
After tending to family commitments in 1999, Wakefield-Baynes came back with yet another bronze in 2000 at the Olympic shooting test event, the Sydney World Cup.
But she broke the bronze sequence earlier this year when she won the gold in the trap at the World Cup event in Italy.
Like Diamond and Mark, Wakefield-Baynes will compete in both the trap and double trap events in Sydney.
Wakefield-Baynes lives in Jamestown, South Australia where she describes herself as an athlete and mother.
She says her interests include gardening and parenting.
