The Sydney Art Theatre is proud to announce the launch of the forthcoming production of Thomas Mann's 'Death In Venice'; conceived and directed by Bogadn Koca. Der Tod in Venedig (Death in Venice) by Thomas Mann was published in 1912. Its central figure is Gustav von Aschenbach, a highly respected author, living in Munich and noted for the sobriety and discipline of his writings. As he ages, he decides to take a Mediterranean holiday, which culminates in his stay in Venice, where his attention is held by a 14 year old Polish boy, Tadzio. The fascination of the boy's beauty causes him to prolong his stay even after he has received an intimation that a cholera epidemic is in progress. Thus impending threat of death in Venice, the news of which is suppressed for the sake of the tourist trade, acts as an illumination for Aschenbach. He sacrifices his entire entity, his will, and his sense of dignity, which he has cultivated throughout his life, to the superior experience of beauty and art, which Tadzio reveals to him by his mere presence. The news of the epidemic spreads, and Aschenbach himself feels the onset of the disease. He learns that the Polish family is leaving. On the day of Tadzio's departure the German press reports the death of Gustav von Aschenbach. Sydney Art Theatre's production of Death in Venice, premiering in July 4, 2000, will give a theatrical impression of this powerful 20th century literary classic.
