Hello, Is it in fact possible to taxi in to town from the airport and actually find available accomidation at around 12 to 2 or so in the morning? does anyone have any names or web sites where I could possibly Find a clean and reasonable place for my first night or so in bkk? Through your experiences, what do you think is the best way to go around this. Also, is it common to meet poeple going to town at the airport with the same idea as you?

All replies are greatly appreciated Thank you

My apologies for providing incorrect info on this matter earlier. It's now been suggested by a minister in the Chuan government that the most appropriate time for the upcoming Thai general election would be December 16-17, and will almost certainly not be before the King's Birthday, December 5..

Yet another question on tailors - could anyone advise me on where to go to get good quality clothing made I have heard alot about the tailors but am also aware that there would be alot of places to stay away from - I would ideally like the same quality clothing as Country Road or Esprit - is this possible to achieve or is it expecting the impossible given the conditions and timeframe they would be working in?

I would like to go to Mae Hong Son for a couple days but I hear Pai may be even better. Can I have some opinions from some of you who have been to both? I don't know if I have time to go to both. Has anyone stayed in the Fern Resort or Sang Tong Huts in Mae Hong Son? Which do you recommend for comfort and character? Sang Tong Huts have several types of huts - any recommendations on which one would be appreciated.

Hi-I've been to SIN/BKK. Never to Malaysia. Going mid-Nov., can people please comment on proposed itinerary? Suggestions on bus/train going/coming?

Fly BKK to Phuket to stay one night. Then fly to SIN & stay 2 nights SIN and bus/train it to Johor, Malyaysia and pass thru KL.

Skip KL to Butterworth/Penang/Georgetown to see these cities. Take ferry to go upward to the Langkawai. (Ferry weather fine this time of year? Choppy?)

Then bus it back to Butterworth/Georgetown/Penang (stopping off at 2 sites before B/G/P). And then heading directly to KL.

KL 2-3 nights and see the Cameroon Highlands (1 night if possible). Stay KL 1 night. Then bus/train it back to SIN for a night before going to Thailand.

How does this sound? I want to avoid Mal. Borneo as I assume it's expensive to get there? Bad weather in Nov.? Then avoid EAST COAST b/c of monsoons. Thanks!!!
.Any recommended river trips in Northern Thailand?Anonymous
Wed 4 Oct, 07:08
[Wed 4 Oct, 07:08]
I would like to take my 2 teenaged daughters on a river trip that would impress them - either down the Pai or the Mae kok. Has any one been down both of these that can recommend one or the other? What is the difference in the terrain/vegetation? I know there is a 2 day rubber rafting trip from Pai to Mae Hong Son or just a day trip out of Mae Hong Son. I also know there is a trip out of Thaton to Chiang Rai by raft or longtail. We have limited time. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

2. is it possible to travel at this time of the year overland from bangkok to siem reap (friend did it in march)? when not, anyone can tell us how difficult and maybe how much it is to buy a plane ticket in bangkok to siem reap and return. maybe any recommondations for a special airline?

Is Phuket so far south from Bankok that one may as well go all the way to Singapore to fly home? How big an ordeal would it be to get from there to a rail line for Singapore? Is it worth it for the scenery and rail experience? I'd like to make a stop at Penang, but is the inland "jungle route" more memorable. What are the prices and amenities these days. I'll be interested in learning from your experiences.

Hello People,

Just a quick question for you all....
Does anyone know which is better - 'Moon Travelbooks' or 'Footprint' guidebooks. These two are the most recently printed for Thailand so it makes sense to get one of them. Budget info, off the beaten track stuff and good local knowledge are the important bits for me. Anyone know anything or can recommend one of them??

Cheers muchly

Hi everyone,
I'm planning on visiting Thailand in November and would like to do a 3-4 day trek in/around Chiang Mai. I'm interested in a trip that's a bit off the beaten track, more adventurous, with a chance to meet some local folks. Does anyone have recommendations for tour companies to go with? Is it wise to make a booking ahead of time, or is it possible to hook up with a group upon arrival? Any idea of costs?
Also, would malaria protection (medical) be advised for this type of trek, or would the usual precautions (long pants/sleeves, repellent) suffice? Is malarial medication widely available in Thai/Bkk drugstores, w/ or w/o prescription?
Thanks for any advice/comments!

Hi there - I'm looking for any info on the north-western part of Thailand, I've got a friend coming to visit me here in BKK and I want to show him somewhere not too well beaten by tourists. It doesn't have to be very beautiful, just a nice vibe. If anyone's passed through anywhere like that way up in the north I'd appreciate you letting me know - ta very much!

My boyfriend and I are going to Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore over the next few months and are presently sorting out vaccinations, etc. My boyfriend has been prescribed mefloquine (Larium) (at a cost of Ģ130 for 9 months) but I have heard a lot of scary stories about this, including from a pharmacist who says it can cause damage to the nervous system. If anyone has any suggestions for an alternative please let me know as I have a travel appointment with the nurse tomorrow and would like to be able to ask some questions about other drugs in case I am prescribed the same thing. If I sound half knowledgable on the subject she may be more open to prescribing something less dramatic.

Thanks

New York's Times Union:

"Of Australia's greatest treasures, Ayers Rock, the Great Barrier Reef and the Sydney Opera House are known far and wide. But Down Under's hottest - and newest - global attraction is one of its best-kept secrets: it's excellent food."

The New York Times:

"Between carrying on about Ian Thorpe, the young swimmer with feet almost as big as a kangaroo's, and marvelling at Sydney's magnificent harbor and opera house, the writers and broadcasters covering the Olympic Games have somehow found time to rave about the food and wine they have discovered in Australia. About that, at least, they do not exaggerate. Only a generation or two ago, a can of Fosters and a few shrimp on the barbie defined the epicurean horizons of most people Down Under, but no more. Sydney has become of of the world's great restaurant towns, Australian cuisine is a topice of global interest instead of an oxymoron and Australian wine has long since outgrown the Monty Python troupe's taunts about Perth pink and Nuits-St.-Wagga-Wagga."

As celebrity Chicago chef Charlie Trotter, when asked about the Olympic City, told a New York Reporter: "I would absolutely say London ...(more inside)

Any sections of the rail line between Singapore and Chiang Mai that are a must see by train? Conversely, any sections of the track that aren't worth doing by day?
