Gathering

You can gather online resources by either downloading a copy of the file/s from the World Wide Web or by uploading the file/s from a local drive.

To begin gathering select the Gather Details option from the menu bar on the Title View screen. This will take you to the Edit Gather Details screen where you can specify your gather options and settings. This screen has three tab windows. The Basic window includes options for the gather method and for scheduling gathers. The Filters windows is for adding URL gather filters. The Settings window allows you change default settings including gather depth and direction settings and to specify login and password details.

Downloading from the Web

  • The default gather method is "gathered" which means downloading a copy of the resource indicated in the URL to gather box. This URL defaults from the Publisher's URL field as entered when registering the title, but it can be changed here if desired.
  • The default gather settings mean that all files in the starting URL directory and all sub-directories will be gathered. In order to gather the resource you want you may need to specify gather filters and alter gather settings under the Filters and Settings tabs.
  • Click the Gather on save check box so that a tick appears in the box and click the Save button. This will save your gather settings and initiate a download immediately.

Setting a gather schedule

To create a gather schedule

  1. Select a gather period (e.g. weekly, monthly, annual) from the Schedule drop-down box on the Basic tab
  2. The start date of the first scheduled gather is by default today and will run the following night. However you can change the start date to any date you choose by entering the date in the Start date box.
  3. If you are setting a schedule after you have already completed a download or if you ar changing a schedule, you may need to change the date in the Next gather box.
  4. In addition to or instead a regular gather schedule, you can also specify particular dates on which to gather the resource. Enter the dae in the Non-scheduled Dates box and click the Add button and repeat for each date.

Uploading from a local drive

You can use this option to upload a single file (e.g. a PDF document supplied as an email attachment) or a collection of files and directories (e.g. a web site). To do this:

  1. Go to the Edit Gather Details screen
  2. From the Method drop-down box select Publisher supplied - normal or Publisher supplied - email as appropriate
  3. Click the Gather on save check box so that it is ticked
  4. Click the Save button (this will create an "instance" immediately)
  5. Go to the Process Instances screen (on the PANDAS "portal" this is listed as "Process this title") and click on the instance in the "Recently gathered" list
  6. Go to the Files tab and copy the WebDAV url for this instance
  7. Use your Windows My Netword Places function (or Web Folder depending on the version of Windows you are using) to create a new network place and open access to the PANDAS instance you have created
  8. Using Windows Explorer, copy and paste the file/s from the local drive to the PANDAS instance
