Index Agency - Searching

Starting Searching

The Index Agency - Select screen allows you to search for records for indexing agencies registered in PANDAS.

To begin searching for an indexing agency go to the PANDAS Main Menu and select Index Agency from the list headed Archive Management. This will take you to the Index Agency - Select screen. When you have finished searching and want to return to the PANDAS Main Menu, click on the Finish button. You can also return to the Main Menu from the Index Agency - Select screen by clicking on the PANDAS icon.

Index Agency - Select Screen

You can locate a record for an indexing agency registered in PANDAS by searching on any one of a number of data fields, including the indexing agency's name, the title of a publication, persistent identifier (PI) or URL. When searching in the Index Agency - Select screen, irrespective of whatever data field you search on, the result in the first column will be a list of indexing agency names.

Depending what data field you search on, a second column will list the results of your search associating them with indexing agency names in the first column.

In your search results the hypertext links for the indexing agencies' names will take you to the record for the indexing agency viewed through the Index Agency - Management screen. Links to titles in the second column will take you to the record for the title viewed through the Title - Management screen.

Selecting Data Fields for Searching for Indexing Agency Records

To select the data field by which you wish to search for an indexing agency record, choose an option from the Select Search drop-down box. The options are:

Indexer  A drop-down selection box listing indexing agencies registered on  PANDAS. (See instructions below.)
Title  Keyword or direct-order alphabetical searching on the title of a  publication. (See instructions below.)
PI  Persistent Identifier. A unique number assigned by PANDAS to each title.  (See instructions below.)
URL  The Uniform Resource Locator of the publisher's site.
 PURL  Persistant Uniform Resource Locator.

Searching on the Name of an Indexing Agency

The default search option on the Index Agency - Select screen is by indexing agency name. To search for the record of an indexing agency registered on PANDAS open the Search Data drop-down box and select the name from the list.

Keyword Searching

Keyword searching is available on the Title, URL and PURL data fields.

To begin searching by keyword make sure there is a tick in the Keyword check-box. If both the Keyword and Alphabetical check-boxes are ticked the system will still perform a keyword search.

When searching by keyword enter either a single keyword or a phrase in the Search Data box. You can only search on a single word or words that appear consecutively as a phrase; however, the word or phrase may appear anywhere in the title, URL or PURL.

To perform the search click the Searchbutton.

Alphabetical Searching

Alphabetical searching is available on the Title, URL and PURL data fields.

To perform an alphabetical search make sure there is a tick in the Alphabetical check-box only. Alphabetical searching locates records with titles, URLs or PURLs beginning with the word or letters you enter. The system searches letter by letter so you do not need to type in the whole word. e.g. digital or digi.

Viewing Search Results

To view the record for an indexing agency from the list of search results click on the name which appears as a hypertext link.

Searching for Indexing Agency Records by Publication Title

When you search for an indexing agency record on data fields other than the indexing agency name, for example the Title data field, the search result will display in two columns. The second column will list the results from the data field you searched on, while the first column will list the associated indexing agency name.

To search for an indexing agency using the title data field:

  1. Select Title from the Search Select drop-down box
  2. Click on the appropriate tick boxes depending on whether you wish to do a keyword or and alphabetical search
  3. Type the title (keyword, phrase or initial letters or words of the title as appropriate) in the Search Data box
  4. Click the Search button

The results of the title search will appear in the second column. The names of the indexing agencies for the titles appear in the first column.

To indicate whether you want to search for a specific PI or all PIs before or after a specified number click on the appropriate radio button.
