INSECTs - SearchingStarting SearchingThe INSECT - Select screen allows you to search for records about collections of archived titles (INSECTs). These records include details about the subjects allocated to the collection, a title entry page description, sub-groups (subheadings) included on the title entry page and general notes about the collection. To begin searching for an indexing agency go to the PANDAS Main Menu and select INSECTs from the column headed Archive Management. This will take you to the INSECT - Select screen. When you have finished searching and want to return to the PANDAS Main Menu, click on the Finish button. You can also return to the Main Menu from the INSECT - Select screen by clicking on the PANDAS icon. INSECT - Select ScreenYou can locate a record for an INSECT collection by searching on any one of a number of data fields, including the title of the INSECT collection, the title of a publication, persistent identifier (PI) or URL. When searching in the INSECT - Select screen, irrespective of whatever data field you search on, the result in the first column will be a list of INSECT titles. Depending what data field you search on, a second column will list the results of your search associating them with INSECT titles in the first column. In your search results the hypertext links for the INSECT titles will take you to the record for the INSECT viewed through the INSECT - Management screen. Links to titles in the second column will take you to the record for the title viewed through the Title - Management screen. Selecting Data Fields for Searching for INSECT RecordsTo select the data field by which you wish to search for an INSECT record, choose an option from the Select Search drop-down box. The options are:
Searching on the Name of an INSECT CollectionThe default search option on the INSECT - Select screen is by INSECT name. To search for the record for an INSECT collection registered on PANDAS open the Search Data drop-down box and select the name from the list. Keyword SearchingKeyword searching is available for searches on publication titles only, not on the titles of INSECT records. To begin searching by keyword make sure there is a tick in the Keyword check-box. If both the Keyword and Alphabetical check-boxes are ticked the system will still perform a keyword search. When searching by keyword enter either a single keyword or a phrase in the Search Data box. You can only search on a single word or words that appear consecutively as a phrase; however, the word or phrase may appear anywhere in the title of the publication. To perform the search click the Search button. Alphabetical SearchingAlphabetical data searching is available for searches on publication titles only, not on the titles of INSECT records. To perform an alphabetical search make sure there is a tick in the Alphabetical check-box only. Alphabetical searching locates publications with titles beginning with the word or letters you enter. The system searches letter by letter so you do not need to type in the whole word. e.g. journal, or jour. Viewing Search ResultsIf you have selected an INSECT name from the drop-down selection box the result will include only that INSECT. If you search by publication title it is possible that the result will include more than one title. All titles matching your search will appear in the second column and links to associated INSECT records will appear in the first column. To view the record for an INSECT collection from the list of search results, click on the name which appears as a hypertext link. Searching for INSECT Records by Publication TitleWhen you search for an INSECT record on data fields other than the INSECT title, for example the publication title data field, the search result will display in two columns. The second column will list the results from the data field you searched on, while the first column will list the associated indexing agency name. To search for an INSECT using the (publication) title data field:
The results of the title search will appear in the second column. The names of the indexing agencies for the titles appear in the first column. Searching for INSECTs using Persistent Identifiers (PIs)You can search for INSECT records using the unique identifying number (PI) allocated to each publication title on PANDAS. You have the option to search for a specific PI or you can search for all PIs with numbers greater or lesser than the number you specify. To indicate whether you want to search for a specific PI or all PIs before or after a specified number click on the appropriate radio button. |
