Publisher - Searching

Starting Searching

The Publisher - Select screen allows you to search for records for publishers registered on PANDAS.

To begin searching for a publisher go to the PANDAS Main Menu and select Publisher from the column headed Archive Management. This will take you to the Publisher-Select screen. When you have finished searching and want to return to the PANDAS Main Menu, click on the Finish button. You can also return to the Main Menu from the Publisher - Select screen by clicking on the PANDAS icon.

Publisher - Select Screen

You can locate a record for a publisher registered in PANDAS by searching on any one of a number of data fields, including the publisher's name, the title of a publication, persistent identifier (PI) or URL. When searching in the Publisher-Select screen, irrespective of whatever data field you search on, the result in the first column will be a list of publisher names.

Depending what data field you search on, a second column will list the results of your search associating them with publishers names in the first column.

In your search results the hypertext links for the publishers' names will take you to the record for the publisher viewed through the Publisher-Management screen. Links to titles in the second column will take you to the record for the title viewed through the Title-Management screen.

Searching is not case sensitive so you do not need to capitalise names.

Selecting Data Fields for Searching for Publisher Records

To select the data field by which you wish to search for a publisher record, choose an option from the Select Search drop-down box. The options are:

Publisher  Keyword or direct-order alphabetical searching on a publisher's name.
Title  Keyword or direct-order alphabetical searching on the title of a  publication. (See instructions below.)
PI  Persistent Identifier. A unique number assigned by PANDAS to each title.  (See instructions below.)
URL  The Uniform Resource Locator of the publisher's site.
 PURL  Persistant Uniform Resource Locator.

Keyword Searching

To begin searching by keyword make sure there is a tick in the Keyword check-box. If both the Keyword and Alphabetical check-boxes are ticked the system will still perform a keyword search.

When searching for a publisher by keyword enter either a single keyword or a phrase in the Search Data box. You can only search on a single word or words that appear consecutively as a phrase; however, the word or phrase may appear anywhere in the publisher's name.

To perform the search click the Search button.

Alphabetical Searching

To perform an alphabetical search make sure there is a tick in the Alphabetical check-box only. Alphabetical searching locates publishers with names beginning with the word or letters you enter. The system searches letter by letter so you do not need to type in the whole word. e.g. deakin, or deak, or deakin uni.

Viewing Search Results

Search results are displayed in ascending alphabetical order in batches of 10. If there are more than 10 records matching your search you can view the next batch of results using the navigation arrows at the bottom of the list.

To view the record for a publisher the list of search results click on the name which appears as a hypertext link.

Searching for Publisher Records by Publication Title

When you search for a publisher record on data fields such as the title data field, the search result will display in two columns. The second column will list the results from the data field you searched on while the first column will list the associated publisher's name.

To search for a publisher using the title data field:

  1. Select Title from the Search Select drop-down box
  2. Click on the appropriate tick boxes depending on whether you wish to do a keyword or an alphabetical search
  3. Type the title (keyword, phrase or initial letters or words of the title as appropriate) in the Search Data box
  4. Click the Search button

The results of the title search will appear in the second column. The names of the publishers for the titles appear in the first column.

Searching for Publishers using Persistent Identifiers (PIs)

You can search for publisher records using the unique identifying number (PI) allocated to each title on PANDAS. You have the option to search for a specific PI or you can search for all PIs with numbers greater or lesser than the number you specify.

To indicate whether you want to search for a specific PI or all PIs before or after a specified number click on the appropriate radio button.
