Titles - SearchingStarting SearchingTo begin searching for a title go to the PANDAS Main Menu and select Title from the Archive Management column. This will take you to the Title - Select screen. When you have finished searching and want to return to the Main Menu, click on the Finish button. You can also return directly to the Main Menu from any screen you have accessed while searching for titles by clicking on the PANDAS icon. Title - Select ScreenYou can locate a title in PANDAS by searching on any one of a number of data fields, such as title, URL, persistent identifier (PI), or owner. When searching in the Title - Select screen, irrespective of whatever data field you search on, the results will be a list of titles. For example, searching on a publisher name will list all titles associated with that publisher. As searching is not case sensitive you do not need to capitalise names or the first words of titles. You have the option to find titles either by a keyword (or phrase) search or by a direct-order alphabetical search; or, for some data fields, you can select from options in a drop-down box. Selecting Data Fields for SearchingTo select the data field by which you wish to search for a title, choose an option from the Select Search drop-down box. The options are:
Keyword SearchingTo begin searching by keyword make sure there is a tick in the Keyword tick-box. If both the Keyword and Alphabetical tick-boxes are ticked the system will still perform a keyword search. When searching for a title by keyword enter either a single keyword or a phrase in the Search Data box. You can only search on a single word or words that appear consecutively as a phrase; however the word or phrase may appear anywhere in the title. To perform the search click the Search button. Alphabetical SearchingTo perform an alphabetical search make sure there is a tick in the Alphabetical tick-box only. Alphabetical searching locates titles beginning with the word or letters you enter. The system searches letter by letter so you do not need to type in the whole word. e.g. digital, or digi, or digital di. Sorting and Viewing Search ResultsYou can sort the list of titles by clicking on the arrowheads to the left of the column headings. The default sort is by title in ascending order (A to Z). The arrowhead next to the word Title will be pointing downwards . To sort the list by title in descending order (Z to A) click on the arrowhead next to Title . The arrowhead will now point upwards . The status of the title (e.g. National Preservation or Reject) is also displayed in the search results. You can sort the search results by title status by clicking on the arrowhead next to the word Status. Click on the arrowhead and it will change to point downwards. The titles will be listed with those selected for National Preservation first and Reject titles last. By clicking the arrowhead so that it points upwards the Reject titles will be listed first and the National Preservation titles last. Search results are displayed in batches of 10. If there are more than 10 titles matching your search you can view the next batch of titles using the navigation arrows at the bottom of the list. The double arrow allows you to move forward 10 batch pages. To select a title from the list click on the title. To view the record for a title from the list of search results, click on the title which appears as a hypertext link. Searching on Previous SearchesYou can repeat a search you have already done by selecting it from the Previous Search drop-down box. Selecting a search from the drop-down box will automatically activate the search. If you wish to modify the search, e.g. to add more letters to the word or phrase, you can do this after the system has performed the repeat search. Your previous searches will remain available from the drop-down box until you log off. Searching on Registration DatesThe Registration Date is the date the record for the title was first added to PANDAS. A title registered on PANDAS with the status "National Preservation" may or may not have an archived instance. The Registration Date search option allows you to search for titles added to PANDAS on a specific date. Enter the date in the boxes provided and click Search . Enter both the day and month as one or two digits (e.g. July = 7, December = 12) depending on the date but the year must be entered in its full four digit form, i.e. 2001 not 01. You can also use the Registration Date search option to list all titles registered on PANDAS either after or before a specified date. Enter the date in the boxes provided and click on the appropriate check-box so that it appears with a tick: Before Date to list titles added prior to the specified date; After Date to list titles added since the specified date. Searching Titles Included in PANDORA INSECT CollectionsINSECTs are collections of archived titles that are accessed through a single title entry page. Typical INSECTs include collections of election campaign sites or some of the titles archived to document events such as the Olympic Games. INSECT title entry pages may also include sub-groupings of titles under subheadings, e.g. "Lobby Groups" within an election campaign INSECT. You have the option to search using a specific PI or you can search for all PIs with numbers greater or less than the number you specify.
